Award-winning project
About the client
SC Johnson is a leading manufacturer of consumer products and household essentials. Project Overview
Opportunity
In many developing countries, homework is routinely interrupted by outside distractions, especially the daily invasion of mosquitos that come into homes at dusk. Unreliable electricity often pushes children outside under the streetlights to do homework. In these conditions, often education is seriously compromised.
In collaboration with S.C. Johnson, BBDO, and Child Fund, we developed and distributed solar-powered lanterns to families in the rural Philippines. The lanterns simultaneously protect children from mosquitoes and provide much-needed light for studying.
Solution
In many developing countries, homework is routinely interrupted by outside distractions, especially from mosquitos that invade homes at dusk. Unreliable electricity also forces homework outside under street lights, compromising children’s ability to learn and continue education.
As part of the Light for Hope initiative, five villages were selected to have large solar panels installed at village centers and schools. Each solar panel was constructed to allow 100s of lithium-ion batteries to be charged daily so that the power could be taken home to power individual lanterns at night.
The Light for Hope won multiple awards including a Bronze Lion at Cannes, a Bronze Pencil at The One Club, and a Shortlist at CLIO.
